After I used Meshy generate them needed to a lot of sculpting in Blender to improve them and unify their style. In the end using Meshy AI didn't save much time. I could have just sculpted them in Blender from scratch.

Used Gemini and Meshy to generate the base high-poly meshes then I used decimation, Quadremesher and maunal modeling to create the low-poly versions. In the end the process of using Meshy saved me a bit of time.

The decimation I used for the low-poly on these structures resulted in very rough triangulated topology. But for our quick prototype and with our camera not being very close, they worked out fine in our scene.

Iron Reef - 2026

In this short 3 week R&D project, Myself and three other artists were tasked with using this project to find practical ways to use AI tools for fast prototyping. Our end of project deliverables were just a video playthrough (vertical slice) of the environment and documentation of what we learned. We had no engineers on the project.

The four of us came up with the basic concept for this underwater side scrolling game. I was responsible for the environment assets, the level construction, and the lighting. I also did some AI generation work for the character model.

While the generated assets served well for a rapid prototype, they fall short of production-ready quality. Prompting the AI for specific images and 3D meshes—particularly for the character model—proved time-intensive, highlighting the trade-offs between automated generation and manual iteration in early-stage development.

Takeaways:
1. The assets were good enough for this quick prototype, but not ideal for final game assets. AI image generation or mesh generation was more time consuming than expected but I am encouraged by how this tech will further develop and streamline the process in the future.
2. I found it better to use AI images or mesh generation as reference and not try to force it farther into my workflow.
3. I should have quickly given up on using AI for your asset generation when it couldn't give me exactly what I wanted.
